Machine Shop PSA
As we are moving into a new school year I would like to remind people of some of the rules around the M5 Machine Shop
As you may or may not know I am the Machine Shop Manager, and it is my duty to make sure the machine shop stays clean, stocked, and most importantly - safe.
There is also Qingchuan Wu, better known as Q which is a regular and a grad student. He is helpful and very knowledgeable but please remember that he is not staff and will not be able to help you in the way that M5 employees can.
Now into the bread and butter here:
Safety
The machine shop is a very useful space we have at M5 but because of the inherent danger that lies in using any sort of fabrication tool there are a few rules that must be followed.
you will find that some of the machines are locked off and can only be used with either mine (Aidan Chin) or Q’s supervision, this is due to their increased power and therefore increased danger.
The proper PPE (personal protective equipment) must be worn at all times without exception, they can be found to the left of the entrance on the shelving.
I encourage you to poke around the First Aid kit to know what we have in case of an emergency, it is located to the left of the door as well, hanging on the wall above the fire safe.
Using the Space
While you are using the space please respect the Staff Members (What they say goes) and read the signs posted around explaining the various machines and rules. We have a strict cleaning policy so please clean up after yourself and bring everything you want to keep home, at the start of each of my shifts I throw everything that cant be put back into the trash and other staff members might at other times too.
Please keep the space clean so I can focus on improving the machine shop
