Mocking Up the Boombox

As has been covered in the past, one of the projects I’m currently working on is a rolling supersized boom box. For our Open House this past Saturday, I was requested to come up with somewhat of a scale model mockup.

For my process, I started by capturing high-resolution images of the speakers and rack we plan to use, then correcting for color and distortion.

I then put these images into GIMP, my choice of photo manipulation software along with an image I found online of a reel-to-reel tape player.

After calculating the scale needed to get the correct size, I had it printed out with the help of our lab manager Luke. Once printed, I cut out the part that I needed.

A still image is good, but not great when it doesn’t take up 3D space. I took some scrap cardboard and measured out the dimensions I would need to attach this mockup to a wooden dolly we have in the Machine Shop. I then cut out the cardboard, glued it together, and attached the print with magnets. The finished result is a rolling 1/2 scale mockup of what the Boombox will look like!
