Bike Maintenance in the Machine Shop

My bike has not been in the best shape since break as it was just sitting in our garage for a few months. Since today was pretty warm it was a good time to do some maintenance.

As you can see, the kickstand is a little bit too short, it was actually so bad that sometimes it would just fall over if it was windy.

The chain is also in bad shape so I need to tend to that

this is right after I took the kickstand off, when I learned that there was some water just sitting in the kickstand so it was good I removed it fully to clean it, there is also a scrape where the paint rubbed off so that needs to be addressed also.

taking the whole thing apart I learned that there was a set screw that allowed you to change the length of the stand.

You can see here I slid the foot down with the set screw, this is also a better picture of the scratch.

An easy way I figured to prevent corrosion on that area was to cover it in some liquid electrical tape

I made sure to thoroughly clean the area before applying the liquid electrical tape

Now the kickstand holds the bike up much more straight.

Next I wanted to really scrub down the chain so I removed a link and got it with brake cleaner. I do not recommend this unless it is really necessary as we have a tool to clean and oil the chain without removing it from the bike

not all the rust is removed but it is in a lot better shape than before.

just make sure to put something down while greasing the bike so it doesn’t ruin the floor

after giving it a good clean, the bike is looking almost brand new.
